LONDON, Ky. (Dec. 7, 2023) – Kentucky State Police Trooper Steve Walker was among 170 officers honored for their efforts to protect motorists from impaired drivers at the annual Governor’s Impaired Driving Enforcement Awards last month.
A 41-year veteran of the agency, Trooper Walker has written 5,969 Driving Under the Influence (DUI) citations since becoming a trooper in 1982. Walker has won the annual impaired driving award 34 times.
Walker currently serves at Post 11 London and has previously served at Post 7 Richmond, Post 14 Ashland, and Post 15 Campbellsville.
London Post Captain Ryan Catron said Sergeant Walker has dedicated his career to traffic safety and DUI enforcement.
“He is truly one of a kind and an asset to our Post and the Commonwealth of Kentucky,” said Catron. “Trooper Walker’s dedication sends a powerful message that impaired driving will not be tolerated.”
Trooper Walker said the apprehension of impaired drivers is important to him because he has seen first-hand the destruction alcohol-involved crashes can cause.
“Crashes involving alcohol cause injuries and death to innocent people every day across our country,” said Walker. “If I can stop that from happening to just one family, it is worth it.”
According to the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety (KOHS), last year in Kentucky, there were 4,127 total crashes involving an impaired driver, resulting in 1,990 injuries and 189 deaths.
